September 22, 2003 | Police Chief addresses AGM

Toronto Police Chief Julian Fantino has commended Tropicana for the valuable work it has been doing in the community since 1980.

The Chief praised the organization while addressing this year's Annual General Meeting of Tropicana. He said members of the Police Service are willing and ready to work with Tropicana and other organizations in an effort to combat problems facing the community.

Fantino, responding questions about police approach to solving crimes involving non-white victims, said police treat all crimes equally seriously, regardless of the race of the victim. He claimed that very often, police investigations are hampered by a lack of witnesses coming forward to offer information to the cops.

At the meeting, Scotiabank executive Christine Williams was re-elected for another term as president of Tropicana.

April 23, 2003 | Launch of program to combat youth violence

A program developed in the United States as a preventative strategy to reduce aggressive behaviour among youth is being introduced in Canada.

Aggression Replacement Training (ART), a skills training curriculum that addresses youth violence, started in the U.S. in 1986 and has been successfully adopted in eight other countries.

Tropicana Community Services will be the lead organization for ART when it comes to Canada. Tropicana will facilitate training not only for its counselling staff, but also for community workers in other organizations.

Former banking executive Mary Anne Chambers, who is a candidate in the next provincial election, is heading a volunteer committee that will oversee the introduction of the ART program at Tropicana.

Chambers will officially launch ART at this year's Tropicana Caribbean Night fundraising gala scheduled for May 3 at Delta Toronto East Hotel, 2035 Kennedy Road.

Scotiabank, the signature sponsor of the event, will also make the first donation in support of the ART program in Canada.

"We are delighted to be the lead organization for the ART program in Canada," said Sharon Shelton, Executive Director of Tropicana. "It fits perfectly with the core of our mission, which is to serve youth."
